PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am excited for the month of November with two exciting events for our profession and growth opportunities!

International Volunteer Managers Day was first celebrated in 1999 as a way to recognize individual Volunteer Managers and the important work performed by Volunteer Managers in mobilizing and supporting volunteers. Since 2008 the official date of International Volunteer Mangers Day has been set as November 5th.The Volunteer Administrators’ Network will celebrate this very important day on Thursday, November 8th!  Join us for a catered breakfast by Metro Cuisine as we celebrate our VAN Award Recipients for 2018!  We will then further our celebration as we take you on an adventure in exploring our field of work in Volunteer Administration and preparing our survival toolkit.  Each Volunteer Administrator that attends will take home a small gift in appreciation of the work you do. Register HERE to attend!

Each year this conference provides a variety of workshops to support the professional development from the beginner to the advanced in Volunteer Management. This year’s conference has been moved to November 14th and will take place at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio.  Tobi Johnson, consultant and expert trainer in volunteer administration is the special guest for this event.  You can find more information here.

Thank you for being a member of VAN and I look forward to learning and growing with each of you as we celebrate the work we do this November!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Name: Jonathon L. Huber ASA, MAAA
Job Title: Director, Enterprise Model Risk Management
Organization: Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company

How long have you been in your profession?  12 years working in various roles as an Actuary
Describe the work you do.  I manage and oversee Model Risk Management across the entire organization.  My primary responsibilities are to promote model risk governance with model owners throughout the enterprise and to direct a team of independent model validators. The objective of a validation is to conclude on a model’s suitability for use by testing a model’s conceptual soundness.
You’re not in Volunteer Administration…How did you wind up on the VAN Board?   Anthony Sutch who was the past Treasurer at VAN for several years reached out to me as a candidate for the position. I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to volunteer my time and skills to a great organization.
What do you enjoy most about your service to VAN?   I’ve enjoyed being able to learn about different organizations throughout Columbus who promote volunteerism.
Do you have other community involvements?  My wife teaches school at Columbus City Schools and I have volunteered on numerous tasks over the years to help her and her fellow educators. In addition to that, I’m active with my children’s (Mitchell – 8, Emelia – 5) school and sporting events, habitat for humanity, and giving blood with the American Red Cross.
