VANtage: April 2017

President’s Message

The political and philosophical atmosphere in our country and around the world is becoming increasingly divisive, and as Volunteer Administrators, we might feel stuck in the middle of competing ideas and interests. On one hand, we are seeing threats to our funding sources, changes to the ways in which we collect volunteer data, and clients and volunteers who are questioning whether they are welcome in our nation any longer. On the other, citizen engagement is increasing, people are stepping up to help where they can, and many are becoming more thoughtful about how the words they use are heard by others.
The tension may be high, but I choose to stay positive. I was talking with a gentleman a few weeks ago who believes that cutting back on federal spending is a good thing, but in the same breath he said that it means people who have the means and opportunity to help need to step up. I recruited him as a volunteer on the spot. We won’t agree with every person we interact with, but it won’t help our causes to isolate ourselves in cocoons of sameness. Let involvement and volunteerism be a bridge that holds our communities together.
That doesn’t mean we have to give up our convictions. As VAN President, I will be sending a letter to the Corporation for National and Community Service encouraging them to continue to collect valuable data on the status of volunteer service in the United States, and I encourage all volunteer leaders to do the same. Information on the proposed changes to the Volunteer and Civic Life Assessment is available at https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2017-02-08/pdf/2017-02527.pdf. If we work together, we can carry out the changes that will make the world better.

Sincerely,
Nick Linkenhoker
VAN Central Ohio President

VANtage: March 2017

President’s Message

Of all the seasons of the Catholic year, Lent is the one that most affects me. This 40 day period before Easter wasn’t always my favorite, since it usually meant giving up chocolate or ice cream or TV, but as I have grown older and thought more about why we fast and reflect on the ways we can improve ourselves, it has become a meaningful and helpful time for me every year (although my wife will tell you I like them because of the fish frys). Similar observances can be found in Judaism and Islam, and that got me thinking about why in every culture I know, there’s at least some emphasis on self-improvement.

For many volunteers, self-improvement is part of their service. They want to use their time of service to reflect on where there is still need in this world and to help affect change. As Volunteer Administrators, we can’t provide absolution for past sins, but we can recognize the good work volunteers are doing every day for the betterment of the communities we serve. How do we thank them and recognize their service? We’ll be talking about just that this month in preparation for National Volunteer Week in April. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Nick Linkenhoker
VAN Central Ohio President

VANtage: February 2017

President’s Message

Recent events have made me spend more time reading philosophy lately, and I’ve been struck by two competing theories on the passage of time. Absolutism tells us that the time we spend on earth is just a piece of the larger puzzle of time; as Nietzsche puts it, “what is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal.” But for those who think that our lives should make a greater difference, there’s Existentialism, the belief that our existence here on earth matters in a much more important way than just as a blip on the radar.

I walk a tight rope between the two ideas. As a student of history, I believe that what happened before I came into existence matters, and that someday I will be history, too. There’s nothing that I can do to halt the sands through the hourglass. On the other hand, great people matter, and we wouldn’t be where we are today if they hadn’t been part of our shared story.

That’s how I see my time as the President of the Volunteer Administrator’s Network. My term is for a short time, and to ignore the contributions of past leaders would be a grave error. But I hope to see a renaissance for VAN that sees us bring on new members, strong speakers and programs, and greater relevance to our community. I’m so glad to be a member of a group that is already absolutely and existentially great.

Sincerely,
Nick Linkenhoker
VAN Central Ohio President

January 2017 VANtage

President’s Message

Dear VAN Members,

What a year 2016 was! A year ago, your VAN Board met for our annual retreat and spent a great deal of time discussing the “Value of VAN” and how we could provide the most for you. I hope that this past year you were able to find immense value in this network of organizations and individuals, whether through a new skill learned, a resource shared or a new relationship built. Our board met again early last month and continued the discussion of how we can ensure each of you get the most from your membership. We have some great things in mind for this year (stay tuned!) and we will be seeking your feedback and input into how we can continue to make VAN a valuable part of your professional life.

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and cheers to 2017.

Best,
Melanie

November 2016 VANtage

President’s Message

Dear VAN Members,

“Let us remember the large numbers of citizens who, day in and day out, through acts of volunteerism large and small, bring hope to so many of the world’s disadvantaged. Let us ensure that this wonderful resource, available in abundance to every nation, is recognized and supported as it works towards a more prosperous and peaceful world.” — Kofi Annan

Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, we can all certainly agree that we are living in an extraordinary moment in history. The election has been divisive and has challenged people across our country to grapple with the wide array of beliefs, values, and ideals held by our friends, family, and neighbors on both sides of the aisle. But, at this moment in time, we as Volunteer Administrators’ have the great privilege and opportunity to create spaces where all people, despite the differences they may have, can come together and collectively work together to create change. As we create these opportunities, it is imperative that we listen and seek to understand one another. As leaders in our organizations and communities, we have the opportunity to engage people in action – what an amazing task! Looking forward to having conversations with you all at our upcoming general meeting later this week and our upcoming holiday party.

Best,
Melanie

ICYMI
We succeeded in meeting and exceeding our VAN Membership Goal of 60 memberships in 2016. Thank you for being a member of VAN. There are many types of organizations that involve volunteers in their day-to-day operations. Our members come from the nonprofit community where volunteers help to accomplish more and broaden the reach of the organization. Volunteers are also used in some for-profit organizations to expand their capacity. We also welcome members from corporations who seek opportunities for their employees. Click here to check out the full list of organizations that make up VAN and be sure to read on as we introduce the new VAN Member Spotlight to our monthly newsletter!
