VANtage: June 2021

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings Members,
It has finally happened: the pandemic restrictions have disappeared, allowing us to create a new normal and move about without masks if we are fully vaccinated. Depending on where you live, vaccination rates are decreasing, a lot of retail companies and restaurants have abandoned pandemic restrictions.

Even though I am fully vaccinated, I am not fully comfortable going back to riding public transportation, going into the big box stores and other crowded places without my mask. I have given myself permission to say, “It’s okay for me to not be comfortable yet.” Vaccines are never 100%; I have however, given myself permission to go out and enjoy my friends and family again!

My message to our members, go out and enjoy, but you can give yourself permission to decide on how you move back into society. Our VAN Professional Development sessions will remain virtual for a little while longer. But look forward to a late summer outdoor event! Please join us on June 17, 2021, for a virtual presentation: “Am I Making the Right Decision? The Role of Ethics in Volunteer Engagement.”

JUNE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

VAN Professional Development Meeting
Topic: Am I Making the Right Decision?  The Role of Ethics in Volunteer Engagement
Time: Thursday, June 17th, 2021 09:00 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada) over Zoom
Description: Faiza Venzant, CVA will be presenting at our June PD meeting. The presentation is 90 minutes long. This will go over our usual time for meetings.

This session will provide participants with an overview of ethical core values and principles which apply to volunteer engagement. We’ll also review a decision-making process for navigating real-life ethical dilemmas on the job, as well as tips on how to incorporate ethics into the fabric of your organization. Content is based on the "Professional Ethics in Volunteer Administration" material developed by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA).

Faiza Venzant CVA is the Executive Director of the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration and General Manager, Volunteer Development at the YMCA of Greater Toronto. With 20 years of leadership experience in volunteer engagement, she continues this work with a goal of improving equity and access to volunteerism and increasing diversity amongst professional leaders of volunteers.  In 2018, Faiza published her first children’s book entitled, My Mamma Wants to Eat Me Up!  As a mother of two young boys, she has not actually eaten any of her children up.
